The United States Department of War has announced a $100 million follow-on preferred equity investment in Atlantic Alumina Company LLC (Atalco). The funding, directed through the Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment program, aims to secure the operations of the sole remaining domestic alumina refinery in the United States.
Administered by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of War for Industrial Base Policy, this financial injection is designed to support the stabilization and continued operation of the critical facility. Alumina is a vital precursor material required for the production of aluminum, which is heavily utilized in various defense, aerospace, and commercial manufacturing applications.
Securing domestic production capacities for such essential materials has become a key priority for major global powers looking to protect their industrial bases against supply chain disruptions. While primarily a domestic defense initiative for the United States, global supply chain stability remains of significant relevance to European markets and international trade networks, including those connected to Malta.
