The Labour Party criticised Opposition Leader Alex Borg’s Budget reply, describing it as lacking substance and proposals. In a statement, the party said: “Alex Borg’s Budget reply continued to expose the Nationalist Party’s lack of ideas and economic competence.”

At a press conference, Labour Whip and MP Naomi Cachia said Borg had failed during his two-hour speech to mention energy subsidies which, she said, the government would continue guaranteeing through €400 million in investment. She highlighted pension increases, full pensions for widows, the doubling of the tax cut for working parents, an increased Carer’s Grant and full payment for therapy for children with disabilities. Cachia also said the government would honour its commitment on the Super Bonus, including for part-time workers.

Ramona Attard said Borg had omitted several proposals previously circulated to the media. She said he had provided no details on a proposal to refund 50% of loan interest for first-time buyers. Attard also criticised his proposals on work permits and wages, saying he had failed to demonstrate knowledge of existing measures and targets, including those in Malta Vision 2050.
