The Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, and the Chairperson of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), Carmen Ciantar, have launched a new service called ImportaMT at the Malta Freeport in Birżebbuġa.
The initiative, which is a manifesto measure being implemented during the first 100 days of the Government, allows importers to have a product's compliance documentation verified before goods are shipped to Malta. Importers can submit an application for each product for a fee of €50. The MCCAA then reviews the documentation against a compliance matrix covering European Union harmonisation legislation on product safety.
Applicants will receive an official "VERIFIED" or "NOT VERIFIED" decision within five working days from payment, or ten working days if clarification is required. Once verified, the decision is published online and an official receipt with a QR code is issued for Customs verification.
Minister Azzopardi Tanti stated that the service reduces the risk of delays and unnecessary costs. MCCAA Chairperson Carmen Ciantar added that the service offers a modern approach that strengthens consumer protection. The initiative was also welcomed by the President of the Malta Chamber of SMEs, Paul Abela, and Alistair Grima on behalf of The Malta Chamber.
