Nominations have opened for the sixth edition of the Animal Honours Awards, which are scheduled to take place on 2 October 2026. The announcement was made by Alicia Bugeja Said, the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Animal Welfare.
These awards recognise individuals, organisations, sanctuaries, businesses, and animals that make a positive difference in animal protection and welfare. Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said stated that the awards aim to show gratitude, provide visibility to good examples of proper animal care, and inspire more people to contribute. She described animal welfare as a "collective responsibility."
Dennis Sciberras, the Director of the Department for Animal Welfare, encouraged the public to submit nominations, noting that the event recognises those who dedicate long hours to animals. Animal Welfare Commissioner Elliot Magro added that it is fitting to thank these individuals for their efforts and sacrifices.
This year, the public can submit nominations across five categories: the People’s Choice Award for Contribution to the Animal Welfare Sector, the Sanctuary Excellence Award, Volunteer of the Year, the Pet-Friendly Business Award, and the Second Chance Companion Award.
The awards process consists of three phases: public nominations, evaluation by a jury panel to select a shortlist, and a public vote to determine the winners. Nominations remain open until 17 September 2026 and can be submitted through the official website.
