MEP Alex Agius Saliba has secured a discussion of his petition on the €3 tax on Temu at the European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions (PETI) in January, according to a statement issued by his office.
The petition seeks a specific investigation into whether the tax on Temu and other major e-commerce platforms results in Maltese consumers paying more than consumers in larger member countries. It also calls for mitigation measures if disproportionate effects are confirmed. According to the statement, the petition received the unanimous approval of all coordinators.
“The question is clear: are Maltese consumers bearing a disproportionate cost? Merely continuing to analyse the situation is not enough. The necessary corrective measures must be taken where the evidence reveals this injustice,” Alex Agius Saliba said.
His office said the January discussion would bring these concerns directly before the committee and put pressure on the European Commission to provide detailed answers on the issue.
