The Food Safety and Security Authority has issued a notice advising consumers not to eat a Natural SEA fish product following information received from the operator about possible elevated mercury levels.
“The alert states that the following product must not be consumed because it may contain elevated levels of mercury,” the Authority said. The product is “Tranci di Verdesca” (Prionace Glauca), originating from Spain, in 450g packs. The notice identifies lot number 102481408 and a best-before date of 28/02/2028.
According to the Authority, exposure to elevated mercury levels through contaminated fish may negatively affect the nervous system, particularly in the developing fetus during pregnancy and young children, who are more vulnerable to its effects. Consumers are advised to dispose of the implicated product or return it to the store where it was purchased.
For further information, the public may contact the Food Safety and Security Authority on +356 26025000, Monday to Friday between 08:00 a.m. and 03:00 p.m., or email info.fssa@gov.mt.
