Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Provision Anton Refalo has launched the Agricultural Greenhouse Plastic Waste Collection Scheme, implemented by Riżorsi Agrikoli Malta (RAM). The ministry said the service is intended to support farmers in managing waste while strengthening environmental protection.
At the launch, Refalo said the initiative addressed a need in the agricultural sector and would help reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste from greenhouses. “We believe that protecting the environment and supporting farmers should go hand in hand,” he said.
RAM Chief Executive Marielise Tabone said farmers operating greenhouses would be able to register their interest so the agency could organise a service tailored to the sector’s needs. She said the scheme would also help the agency better understand farmers’ requirements and plan more effective services.
The scheme is open to registered farmers operating agricultural greenhouses who hold a valid Farmer Registration Number and Farmer Categorisation Certificate. RAM will assess applications and contact eligible applicants about collection dates and arrangements. Further information about the scheme and the application process is available on the Riżorsi Agrikoli Malta website.
